September 01, (THEWILL) – Scottie Scheffler officially won the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club on Sunday, taking the 2024 FedEx Cup. This victory marks the first season-long championship of his PGA Tour career.
Scheffler finished an impressive 30 under par, defeating Collin Morikawa by four strokes with a final round of 4-under 67. Along with the title, he received a substantial bonus of $25 million.
Scheffler’s round featured a mix of challenges and triumphs. After back-to-back bogeys, he regained momentum with three consecutive birdies at holes 9 to 11. A notable highlight of his round was a 15.5-foot eagle putt at the par-5 14th, capping off a dominant campaign that solidified his status as the world’s top golfer. Morikawa started strong with a 66 but could not close the gap.
Entering the Tour Championship with a 10 under par start due to the FedEx Cup format, Scheffler aimed to overcome disappointments from the previous two years. He became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2007 to achieve seven wins in a single season, including notable victories at the Masters and the Players Championship.
Rory McIlroy commented on Scheffler’s remarkable season, stating that 2024 will be remembered as one of the best individual years for the golfer. With increasing prize money on the PGA Tour, Scheffler broke the record for the most official earnings in a season for the third consecutive year, amassing a total of $29,228,357, excluding the bonus.
Sahith Theegala finished in third place at 24 under with a final-round score of 64. Russell Henley impressed the home crowd with a 9-under 62, finishing tied for fourth with Xander Schauffele and Adam Scott.
