October 17, (THEWILL) – The Golden Boy Award, recognising the top under-21 footballer, has announced its 25 candidates for 2024. Tuttosport, the award’s organiser, revealed the list in Rome on Thursday. The winner will be crowned on December 17 in Turin, succeeding Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham.

Spanish players have dominated in recent years, with Gavi and Pedri claiming the title in 2022 and 2021, respectively. This year’s shortlist features four Spanish contenders: Lamine Yamal, Samu Omorodion, Pau Cubarsi, and Christhian Mosquera. The selection process included five wild card entries and the top 20 players from the Football Benchmark rankings.

Notable candidates include Endrick of Real Madrid, Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, and Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo. English Premier League representation is strong, with players from Manchester City, Crystal Palace, and Tottenham Hotspur also in contention. The list spans various European leagues, a pointer to the widespread talent in youth football.

Yamal is considered as the frontrunner for the 2024 award. The Barcelona winger’s exceptional year includes winning the European Championship with Spain at just 17 years old. His performance in the tournament, particularly a remarkable goal against France in the semi-finals, earned him the Best Young Player award and a spot in the Team of the Tournament.

The Golden Boy Award, established in 2003, has become a significant indicator of future football stars. Past winners include Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, and Kylian Mbappé. The 2024 edition promises to continue this tradition, spotlighting the next generation of football talent across Europe.
