World Records Shattered At Eugene Diamond League Finals

September 18, (THEWILL) – Several world records were broken at the Diamond League finals held in Eugene, Oregon, on Sunday, with Ethiopian runner, Gudaf Tsegay, leading by setting a new women’s 5000m world record with a time of 14 minutes and 21 seconds, nearly 5 seconds faster than the previous record.

Tsegay, the current world champion in the 10000m event, finished well ahead of the competition, with second-place runner, Beatrice Chebet of Kenya, finishing in 14:05.92. In the pole vault competition, Swedish athlete, Armand Duplantis, added one centimetre to his own world record, clearing 6.23 metres on his first attempt. Duplantis set his latest world record at Hayward Field, where he has now broken the pole vault world record twice. The world and Olympic pole vault champion has broken the world record seven times now.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya won the 800m event in a world-leading time of 1:42.80, edging out Marco Arop of Canada, the recent world champion. Wanyonyi’s time was a personal best and he has now defeated Arop twice in two weeks. Arop finished second in a new Canadian record time of 1:42.85.

In the women’s high jump, Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Nicola Olyslagers both cleared 2.03 meters to surpass the previous 2022 world lead height. Mahuchikh was declared the winner. Femke Bol of the Netherlands handily won the women’s 400m hurdles event.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen continued his successful weekend by winning the 3000m event in a new European record time of 7:23.63, just ahead of Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia. His time was just shy of the world record. Grant Fisher of the USA set an American record, finishing third.
