Wood Heads Late Winner As Forest Beat Sheffield To Claim First EPL Win

August 18, (THEWILL) – Nottingham Forest picked up their first English Premier League win of the season on Friday night, defeating Sheffield United 2-1, thanks to an 89th-minute winner by substitute Chris Wood.

Forest had taken an early lead through Nigerian, Taiwo Awoniyi, but were pegged back by Gus Hamer’s equaliser for the Blades shortly after half-time. The match seemed headed for a draw until New Zealand international Wood rose highest to head home a perfect cross from Serge Aurier, a good second assist, in the dying moments.

The victory will come as a relief for manager Steve Cooper after Forest fell to defeat against Arsenal in their season opener last week. Cooper will be encouraged by his side’s strong start, dominating the opening 30 minutes and taking a deserved early lead through Awoniyi. However, Sheffield United grew into the game and were unlucky not to go in front themselves when the score was 1-1.

Ultimately, the electric atmosphere at the City Ground proved pivotal for the home side. The ground was vital in helping Forest achieve promotion last season and the home fans played their part again tonight. Forest face a daunting series of away trips in the next month against the EPL’s elite and will need to make the most of their home advantage.

The win lifts Forest off the bottom of the table while Sheffield United have now lost their opening two matches on their return to the top flight. Chris Wilder’s side competed well for large periods and caused plenty of problems for the Forest defence. However, they were made to pay for not capitalising on their second-half dominance and were punished by Wood’s late winner.

Both teams now look ahead to their next Premier League fixtures next weekend. Nottingham Forest will travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton while Sheffield United host Blackburn Rovers in the League Cup before facing West Ham United.
