October 20, (THEWILL) – Wolverhampton Wanderers manager, Gary O’Neil, voiced his disappointment following a contentious injury-time goal that resulted in a 2-1 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday. The loss left Wolves at the bottom of the English Premier League table with only one point from eight matches.
The crucial moment occurred in the 95th minute when John Stones headed in a corner to break the 1-1 deadlock. The goal underwent a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review for a potential offside involving Bernardo Silva’s position in front of the Wolves goalkeeper. Officials ultimately determined that Silva did not obstruct Jose Sa’s line of vision.
O’Neil drew parallels between this incident and a similar situation from the previous season when Wolves had a goal disallowed against West Ham United. He stated: “We sent an image to referees showing proof that the West Ham keeper could see the ball, but the reason we were given was the player was in close proximity. The same argument could be said here but we just have to accept it.”
Despite his frustration, O’Neil maintained a respectful stance towards the officials’ decision. He said: “I would rather not discuss it because it will still sound like I am making excuses. Whatever decision they make, I respect.” The manager also praised his team’s performance, saying, “I am proud of the players though. An unbelievable effort and we gave ourselves a great chance. I am gutted for the players that we had to leave with nothing.”
The defeat has intensified the pressure on Wolves, who now find themselves in a precarious position at the foot of the League table. With only one point from their opening eight fixtures, the team faces a significant challenge to improve their standing in the coming weeks.
