July 07, (THEWILL) – Carlos Alcaraz, the defending Wimbledon champion, advanced to the quarter-finals after a challenging match against Ugo Humbert on Sunday. The Spanish third seed triumphed 6-3 6-4 1-6 7-5 in a contest that tested his resolve on Centre Court.
Alcaraz started strongly, winning the first two sets with relative ease. However, Humbert fought back impressively in the third set, breaking Alcaraz’s serve three times to keep the match alive.
The fourth set proved to be a tense affair. Humbert had three break points when Alcaraz was serving at 3-4, threatening to force a deciding set. Alcaraz managed to hold serve and ultimately broke Humbert’s serve in the tenth game to claim victory.
This match followed a similar pattern to Alcaraz’s previous round encounter with Frances Tiafoe, where he was also pushed to his limits. The 21-year-old Spaniard has now reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the ninth time in his career.
Alcaraz will face his next opponent in the quarter-finals as he continues his title defence at Wimbledon 2024. The young champion’s ability to overcome tough challenges has been a defining feature of his tournament so far.
