February 27, (THEWILL) – Sarina Wiegman, the Manager of the England women’s national football team, has been named Best FIFA Women’s Coach.
This marks the third time in her career that Wiegman has won the coveted coaching prize, having previously won in 2017 and 2020 while managing the Netherlands team. Wiegman’s success as a coach has been unparalleled in recent years, with her finishing in the top three for six consecutive years, a record unmatched by any other coach.
Wiegman’s success with England has been remarkable, with the team remaining unbeaten under her leadership since she started her job in the autumn of 2021. Her team won 15 out of 17 games in 2022, including a run of 14 successive wins that culminated in a victory over the world champions, the United States.
Among Wiegman’s most impressive achievements in 2022 were England’s 8-0 thrashing of Norway in the Euro 2022 group stage, and their 4-0 demolition of Sweden in the semi-finals. Wiegman has also helped several players reach new heights on the international stage, including Leah Williamson, Beth Mead, and Mary Earps. She has also brought emerging stars like Ella Toone, Alessia Russo, and Chloe Kelly to the fore.
England’s strong start to 2023, where they retained the Arnold Clark Cup, means that they head to the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as one of the favourites to win the tournament.
