January 26, (THEWILL) – West Ham United have finalised the signing of Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City on a loan deal until the end of the 2023/2024 season. The 28-year-old midfielder moves to London Stadium as he looks to play regular first-team football and boost his chances of being selected for England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Phillips joined Manchester City in 2022 from Leeds United for around £42 million on a six-year contract. However, he has struggled for playing time at the Etihad Stadium, making just 16 English Premier League appearances, 14 of which were as a substitute. He has not played competitively since coming on as a second-half substitute in City’s 3-0 FIFA Club World Cup semi-final win against Urawa Red Diamonds in December.
Despite his lack of minutes, Phillips remains in Gareth Southgate’s international plans, earning four England caps already this campaign. His last EPL outing was against Bournemouth on November 4. He could make his West Ham debut against the Cherries on February 1.
West Ham manager David Moyes will hope Phillips can provide extra depth and quality to a Hammers side who have lost just once in their last 10 League games. The addition enhances their chances of qualifying for the Europa League next season.
Everton, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace were also said to be interested in signing Phillips during the January transfer window. However, West Ham have now won the race for the 28-year-old’s signature.
