Weghorst’s Late Winner Seals Netherlands’ Opening Victory Over Poland

June 16, (THEWILL)- Wout Weghorst struck late as the Netherlands edged a 2-1 victory over Poland in their Euro 2024 Group D opener in Hamburg. The Dutch had to come from behind after Adam Buksa headed Poland ahead on 16 minutes before Cody Gakpo’s deflected equaliser.
Ronald Koeman’s side dominated for long spells but struggled to make their pressure count against a resolute Polish defense marshaled by Wojciech Szczęsny in goal. The Oranje finally made the decisive breakthrough with six minutes remaining when Nathan Aké’s deflected cross fell kindly for Weghorst to apply a clinical finishing touch.
Poland pushed hard for a late equalizer but Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen stood firm to ensure his side collected all three points. The win continues the Netherlands’ impressive recent form in tournament openers, having begun their last three major championships with victories.
Gakpo went close to adding to his goal on several occasions for the 1988 European champions. At the other end, Jakub Kiwior and Piotr Zielinski might have scored for Poland, who suffered their first defeat under coach Michał Probierz.
The result leaves the Netherlands top of Group D after the first match of the group, while Poland remains pointless ahead of their next game against Austria.
