Waldrum Names Strong Super Falcons Side For Olympics

July 03, (THEWILL) – Coach Randy Waldrum has finalised Nigeria’s 18-player squad for the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking the Super Falcons’ return to the tournament after a 16-year absence. The selection features a blend of experienced internationals and rising stars, aiming to make history in France this summer.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade leads the charge, supported by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and prolific striker Asisat Oshoala. The defence is bolstered by Osinachi Ohale, Oluwatosin Demehin, and Michelle Alozie, whilst the midfield boasts talents like Deborah Abiodun, Halimatu Ayinde, and Christy Ucheibe. Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Uchenna Kanu round out a formidable attacking lineup.

Waldrum has named Gift Monday, Opeyemi Ajakaye, and Cynthia Aku as alternates, ensuring depth across all positions. The squad’s composition reflects a strategic blend of youth and experience, with several players bringing valuable international tournament expertise to the team.

The Super Falcons face a challenging group stage, opening their campaign against Brazil on July 25 in Bordeaux. Subsequent matches against Spain and Japan in Nantes on July 28 and 31 respectively complete a tough draw for the Nigerian side. This grouping pits them against some of the world’s top-ranked teams, providing an early test of their medal aspirations.

Nigeria’s previous Olympic appearances in 2000 and 2008 ended at the group stage. However, with their recent performances in major tournaments and the current squad’s depth, the Super Falcons are poised to push for their first Olympic medal.
