June 07, (THEWILL) – Czech police have detained no fewer than 16 individuals following a distressing incident where a group of black-clad Fiorentina fans launched an attack on West Ham United supporters at a bar in central Prague.
The violent encounter, which occurred on Wednesday, ahead of the UEFA Europa Conference League final, resulted in injuries to three patrons, while a police officer was also targeted. Video footage shared on Twitter captured the disturbing scene, showing fans igniting flares and hurling tables within the vicinity of the bar situated near Prague’s Old Town Square.
In response to the incident, Czech police took to Twitter, stating: “Italy fans attacked West Ham fans in a bar on Rytirska street, injuring three. A police officer was also attacked. We have restricted the personal liberty of 16 people.” The police force swiftly intervened to apprehend the suspects involved in the assault, ensuring that immediate action was taken to maintain public safety and uphold the rule of law.
Anticipating an influx of approximately 20,000 West Ham supporters, many of whom lacked match tickets, Prague police mobilised several hundred officers to oversee security measures for the highly anticipated event. With this final marking the Hammers’ return to European competition after nearly half a century, the significance of maintaining a secure environment was paramount.
