October 19, (THEWILL) – Max Verstappen claimed victory in the United States Grand Prix sprint race at Austin on Saturday, finishing ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. The Red Bull driver extended his championship lead over Lando Norris to 54 points, with the McLaren driver completing the podium in third place.
The sprint race, which took place ahead of Sunday’s main grand prix, saw Verstappen demonstrate his racing chops once again. This win marks the Dutch driver’s first triumph since his sprint victory at the Austrian Grand Prix weekend in June, ending a period without success.
Norris, who had been on course for a second-place finish, experienced a late lock-up that cost him a position. The British driver commented on his result, stating: “My front tyres were completely finished. A disappointing end but happy with the end result.”
Verstappen, upon receiving the sprint trophy from British music icon Sting, remarked: “Feels like old times,” referencing his recent lack of victories. The reigning world champion’s performance in the sprint race sets the stage for an exciting main event on Sunday.
The United States Grand Prix continues to be a pivotal moment in the 2024 Formula 1 season, with drivers and teams vying for crucial championship points.
