October 30, (THEWILL) – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen cemented his name in the Formula One record books by becoming the first driver to achieve 16 race victories in a single season at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday.
The Dutchman’s supremacy was on full display at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit, where he claimed his fifth Mexican GP win in the last six years. In doing so, the 26-year-old matched the legendary Alain Prost’s career tally of 51 F1 wins.
Verstappen controlled proceedings from the outset, overcoming an early collision between Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez on lap one. The race was red-flagged and restarted midway through when Haas’ Kevin Magnussen crashed heavily, but Verstappen remained unflustered to clinch another historic triumph.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton pushed the champion hard and finished second, setting the fastest lap, while Leclerc recovered from his first lap incident to complete the podium places.
With just two races remaining in 2023, Verstappen has already secured back-to-back world championships. However, his Mexican masterclass proves his desire to rewrite the F1 record books is stronger than ever.
