October 19, (THEWILL) – Former French footballer, Raphael Varane, has joined the board of Serie A club, Como, the Italian side announced on Saturday. The 31-year-old, who retired from professional football in September 2024, will advise on youth development, education, and product innovation.

Como stated that Varane’s role in youth development will focus on integrating academic, leadership, and vocational training into the club’s youth programmes. This initiative aims to prepare young athletes for life beyond their football careers.

Varane’s appointment comes shortly after his retirement, which was prompted by a knee injury in August 2024. The injury led to his exclusion from the Como squad, despite having signed a two-year deal with the club earlier that summer following his release from Manchester United.

The World Cup winner, who played 93 times for France before retiring from international football in 2023, had an illustrious career. He won three La Liga titles and UEFA four Champions League trophies with Real Madrid, as well as an FA Cup and an EFL Cup during his three-year stint at United.

Upon retiring, Varane expressed his intention to remain involved with Como, stating he would stay at the club “just without using my boots and shin pads”. This board appointment fulfils that commitment, allowing the former defender to contribute his expertise to the Italian club’s future development.
