November 09, (THEWILL) – Liverpool were denied a last-gasp equaliser by VAR as they fell to a disappointing 3-2 defeat away to Toulouse in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

Academy graduate, Jarell Quansah, thought he had snatched a barely-deserved point for the Reds when he poked home in the 97th minute. However, VAR spotted a handball by Alexis Mac Allister in the buildup and the goal was ruled out.

The loss ends Liverpool’s perfect start to their Europa League campaign, with the Reds now leading Group A by just two points. Jurgen Klopp rang the changes for the match, making nine from the weekend draw with Luton, but a series of defensive errors proved costly.

Toulouse went ahead on 17 minutes when Kostas Tsimikas was robbed of possession, allowing Aron Donnum to slot home. Thijs Dallinga made it 2-0 on 58 minutes before an own goal gave Liverpool hope. However, Frank Magri restored the French side’s two-goal advantage minutes later.

Diogo Jota set up a grandstand finish with a solo goal on 89 minutes, leading to Quansah’s disallowed effort. Liverpool remained top of Group E with two games left but the Reds missed the opportunity to seal qualification to the next round with this disappointing performance.
