USWNT Seeks New Direction After World Cup Woes, Andonovski Resignation

August 17, (THEWILL) – The United States Women’s National Team will be looking for a new head coach, following the resignation of Vlatko Andonovski.

Andonovski stepped down from his role after the USWNT suffered a shock Round of 16 exit from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The announcement comes two weeks after the World Cup holders were knocked out on penalties by Sweden. The loss marked the earliest tournament exit in USWNT history, ending their bid for an unprecedented third straight title. Andonovski departs after three years in charge of the team.

Under his tenure, the U.S. won bronze at the 2020 Olympics but failed to meet expectations in Australia and New Zealand. The Americans were considered among the favourites but struggled to find their best form during the group stage. They could only beat Vietnam in their first game but struggled to draws against Netherlands and Portugal and fell short against Sweden.

Possible replacements for USWNT coach role include Kilgore herself, Laura Harvey (former USWNT assistant), Tony Gustavsson (Australia Women’s National Team coach), Jill Ellis (former USWNT head coach), Sarina Wiegman (England Women’s National Team coach), and Sonia Bompastor (Lyon Women’s manager).
