July 27, (THEWILL) – At the Women’s World Cup early on Thursday, the US women’s national team showed their resilience in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Netherlands at Sky Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand.

Both teams earned a point as Jill Roord and Lindsey Horan found the back of the net. The Oranje took an early lead with a well-executed shot by Roord, exposing some defensive vulnerabilities in the USWNT. Despite facing adversity, the American team regrouped in the second half, with Horan’s crucial header levelling the score. Though they could not find a winner, the USWNT remained at the top of the group, but with a slim margin.

The opening minutes of the game saw the Netherlands taking control with their swift and precise midfield play, culminating in a goal by Roord in the lower left corner. It was the first time in 18 matches at the World Cup that the USWNT found themselves trailing, an evidence of the challenge they faced against a strong opponent. The American side struggled to maintain possession in the first half, with only 39 percent of the ball.

Horan’s equaliser in the 64th minute brought renewed confidence to the team, still, although they pushed forward with a change in mentality, they were unable to secure a victory, settling for a draw. While the USWNT remains in the lead within the group, their position is now more precarious, relying on goal difference. Their upcoming match against Portugal on Saturday, becomes a crucial moment for one of the favourites to win the trophy.

The team must address their defensive lapses and ensure a cohesive approach to capitalise on their individual talents while the Dutch ladies can seize control of the group leadership with a more clinical display in their last game against Vietnam, which is an easier task.
