March 03, (THEWILL) – Kamaru Usman, a UFC fighter, said on Thursday that he plans to fight Canelo Alvarez later this year.
In a recent interview, the reigning UFC welterweight champion expressed his desire to fight one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, saying: “I am going to shock the world in 2022.
“I will be fighting Leon Edwards during International Fight Week in July. If I can go past Leon Edwards, I will be able to stop Canelo Alvarez on September 1st, Mexican Independence Day.”
If Usman vs. Alvarez takes place, it will be the biggest crossover in combat sports since Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated Conor McGregor in a boxing battle in 2017.
As the first Nigerian ever to be the undisputed UFC welterweight champion, Usman has cemented his dominance in the welterweight category. His 15 consecutive wins make the “Nigerian Nightmare” a record-setter for the longest ever holder of a win-streak in the division of UFC and he had successfully defended his title five times.
