July 29, (THEWILL) – Star gymnast Simone Biles will lead the United States gymnastics team into the Paris Olympics women’s team final on Tuesday. The Americans aim to reclaim gold after settling for silver in Tokyo 2020, where Biles withdrew due to mental health concerns.
The US team topped qualifying with 172.296 points, over five points ahead of second-placed Italy. China qualified third. Biles excelled in qualifying despite a minor calf issue, finishing first in all-around, vault and floor exercise.
USA Gymnastics confirmed Biles will compete on all apparatus in the final. Teammates Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Sunisa Lee round out the American line-up. The format requires three gymnasts per team to compete on each apparatus, with all scores counting.
Biles emphasised the team’s focus is internal: “It has to be for us. It can’t be for anybody else. We do it for ourselves and the love of the sport and the love for representing the USA.”
Brazil, Japan, Canada, Great Britain and Romania complete the field for the final. Scores reset to zero, setting the stage for an intense competition as teams vie for Olympic gold.
