July 07, (THEWILL) – Emma Navarro defeated fellow American Coco Gauff in straight sets at Wimbledon on Sunday, ending Gauff’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals. The 23-year-old Navarro won 6-4 6-3 on Centre Court, outplaying the second-seeded Gauff.
Gauff initially took a 3-1 lead in the first set, breaking Navarro’s serve. However, Navarro quickly broke back and went on to win the set. She continued her momentum into the second set, breaking Gauff’s serve again to take a 3-1 lead.
Navarro closed out the match on her third match point when Gauff netted a forehand. The victory marks Navarro’s first time reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals, where she will face seventh-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini.
The loss was a disappointment for 20-year-old Gauff, who won her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open. She had not dropped a set en route to the fourth round at Wimbledon this year.
There were no upsets in the men’s draw, as top seed Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Ugo Humbert. Jannik Sinner also moved on, beating Christopher Shelton in four sets.
