September 17, (THEWILL) – The United Nations (UN) has announced the donation of $6 million to support the victims of the recent flood that ravaged Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, who made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday, said a joint mission comprising UN agencies and NGOs, alongside the Nigerian Red Cross Society, visited Maiduguri over the weekend.
According to him, the team met with people who had been impacted – many of them had already been displaced multiple times by conflict and insecurity in the area.
“We and our partners are providing them with hot meals, we are facilitating air drops of food in hard-to-reach areas cut off by flood waters, and we are also trucking in water. We are also providing water and sanitation hygiene services and water purification tablets to stem disease outbreaks. This is in addition to supplying hygiene and dignity kits to women and girls, as well as emergency health and shelter services,” Fall said.
He also disclosed that staff of the UN Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs were working closely with donors to secure additional funding.
Meanwhile, business magnate, Aminu Alhassan Dantata, has also donated N1.5 billion to aid the victims.
Dantata, accompanied by a delegation from Kano State, presented the donation at Government House, Maiduguri, on Tuesday.
He expressed his deep condolences to Governor Babagana Zulum, the state government, and the residents affected by the disaster, especially those who lost their loved ones.
In response, Governor Zulum conveyed profound appreciation for Dantata’s visit, emphasising that his gesture of generosity serves as a significant source of hope and solidarity during these difficult times.
“The people of Borno deeply appreciate this show of humanity by a 96-year-old to visit us. Let me say it, our Baba has donated the sum of N1.5 billion to support the flood victims. May Allah bless and reward you with Aljannah. Mu gode, Baba,” said Governor Zulum.
