September 14, (THEWILL) – UFC President, Dana White, has announced a major heavyweight clash for UFC 309. Jon “Bones” Jones will defend his title against Stipe Miocic on November 16, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This bout was initially scheduled for UFC 295 in November 2023 but was postponed due to Jones suffering a torn pectoral muscle during training.

Jones boasts an impressive 27-1 record with one no-contest. The 37-year-old dominated the light heavyweight division for nearly a decade before moving to heavyweight. In his heavyweight debut at UFC 285 in 2023, Jones defeated Ciryl Gane to claim the vacant title. Miocic is widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights in UFC history. With a record of 20-4 and 15 knockouts, the 42-year-old has held the heavyweight title twice.

The matchup between Jones and Miocic is considered a dream fight by many MMA fans. Both fighters stand at 6’4″ with similar reach, promising an evenly-matched physical contest. The outcome could solidify Jones’ status as the greatest pound-for-pound fighter or cement Miocic’s legacy as the top heavyweight of all time.

During Jones’ absence, Tom Aspinall captured the interim heavyweight title by defeating Sergei Pavlovich and successfully defended it against Curtis Blaydes. White has suggested that if Jones emerges victorious against Miocic, a unification bout with Aspinall could be on the horizon.

The UFC 309 card is shaping up to be a blockbuster event. In addition to the heavyweight main event, a lightweight bout between Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira has been confirmed for the card. This stacked lineup is sure to draw significant attention from fight fans worldwide.
