September 15, (THEWILL) – Due to banners that were visible during Celtic’s Champions League match versus Shakhtar Donetsk, UEFA has initiated disciplinary action against the Scottish side.

At the Celtic end of the Polish Army Stadium in Warsaw, where the teams squared off in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, there were a number of banners commemorating the demise of Queen Elizabeth II. Celtic now risk punishment after UEFA confirmed on Thursday, that disciplinary actions will be taken against the team.

However, Celtic’s arch-rivals, Rangers, escaped a similar disciplinary consideration, as they will not be penalised for breaching UEFA’s directives for playing the national anthem in honour of the Queen prior to their 3-0 defeat to Napoli.

According to a representative of the body that oversees European football: “The incident is not the subject of any UEFA disciplinary proceedings.”
