October 08, (THEWILL) – Two passengers have been declared missing and 13 others rescued, after a fibre boat carrying 13 passengers, along with a deckhand, captain and cargo, collided with a wooden boat on Monday night in Lagos.
Lagos Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Engr Sarat Braimah, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, said, five passengers, who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
“On October 7th, 2024, at approximately 6:45 PM, a fibre boat carrying 13 passengers, along with a deckhand, captain and cargo, was en route from Ebute Ero to Badagry when it collided with a wooden boat.
“The wooden boat had just departed from Imore jetty, transporting passengers to Imore waterside.
“Upon investigation, it was found that the wooden boat had barely left the jetty when the fibre boat veered off course. The collision was attributed to the fibre boat captain’s obstructed vision, likely due to the boat’s load.
“Of the 15 passengers believed to have been aboard the wooden boat (as no passenger manifest was completed), 13 were rescued. Five of them sustained injuries and are receiving hospital treatment, but two passengers remain missing as of this report.”
