March 25, (THEWILL) – In a thrilling opening match of the Euro 2024 Group D qualifying campaign, Turkey snatched a 2-1 comeback victory against Armenia, on Saturday.
Orkun Kokcu and Kerem Akturkoglu were the heroes of the day, scoring the two goals that secured the win for the visitors.
The game did not start well for Turkey, as they conceded an own goal in the 10th minute when Ozan Kabak deflected Kamo Hovhannisyan’s cross into his own net. However, Kokcu brought Turkey back to life with a stunning long-range shot that found the corner of the goal in the 35th minute.
It was Akturkoglu, who ultimately sealed the win for Turkey, as he fired a well-placed shot into the corner of the net in the 64th minute.
The victory marks an important start to the qualifying campaign for Turkey, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance at Euro 2020, where they lost all three games and scored only one goal. Croatia will host Wales in the other fixture in the group later on Saturday.
