June 27, (THEWILL) – Turkey claimed their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stages with a thrilling 2-1 victory against the Czech Republic. The match, held on Wednesday, saw both teams battle fiercely for qualification, with Turkey ultimately prevailing in a contest that went down to the wire.
The game took a significant turn when Czech midfielder, Antonín Barák, received a controversial second yellow card early in the first half. Despite being reduced to 10 men, the Czechs managed to hold their own and even equalised in the second half through Tomáš Souček, cancelling out Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s opener for Turkey.
However, Turkey’s persistence paid off in stoppage time when substitute Cenk Tosun netted the winning goal, sending his team through to the last 16. The result means Turkey finish second in Group F, setting up a round of 16 clash with Austria in Leipzig next Tuesday.
For the Czech Republic, the defeat marks a disappointing end to their Euro 2024 campaign. It is only the second time in their history that they have exited the European Championship without a group stage victory.
Despite their valiant effort with 10 men, Ivan Hašek’s side could not overcome the odds stacked against them. The match was characterised by intense action and dramatic moments, reflecting the high stakes for both teams.
