October 16, (THEWILL) – The England Football Association announced on Wednesday that Thomas Tuchel will become England’s new manager, starting his role on January 1, 2025. The 51-year-old German will succeed Gareth Southgate, marking only the third time a foreign manager will lead the Three Lions, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel brings an impressive track record to the position, having managed top European clubs including Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich. His appointment comes after a period of inactivity since leaving Bayern Munich at the conclusion of the previous season. The FA’s decision reflects their aim to end England’s 58-year drought without a major tournament victory.

The German coach’s most notable achievement in English football occurred during his tenure at Chelsea, where he guided the team to UEFA Champions League glory in 2021, merely months after taking charge. He further added to his trophy collection with Chelsea by winning the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup. These accomplishments, combined with league titles at PSG and Bayern, as well as a German Cup with Dortmund, underscore Tuchel’s winning pedigree.

Despite the excitement surrounding Tuchel’s appointment, the decision has faced criticism from some quarters who question the FA’s reluctance to entrust an English manager with the national team’s leadership. However, the FA remains confident in their choice, with CEO Mark Bullingham praising Tuchel as “one of the best coaches in the world”. Tuchel will be supported by English coach Anthony Barry, who previously worked with him at Bayern Munich.

Looking ahead, Tuchel will inherit a talented squad featuring players such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Cole Palmer. This group is expected to be among the favourites for the 2026 World Cup. Tuchel expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating: “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”
