June 21, (THEWILL) – Greek tennis player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, faced disappointment on Wednesday, as he was knocked out of the Halle grass court tournament in the second round.
Tsitsipas, currently ranked as the world number five, lost to Nicolas Jarry of Chile, who is ranked 28th in the world. This marks the third consecutive year that Tsitsipas has exited the Wimbledon warm-up tournament in the early stages.
Meanwhile, top-seeded Daniil Medvedev secured a spot in the quarter-finals by defeating Laslo Djere of Serbia in a hard-fought match.
Medvedev, ranked as the world number three, displayed resilience as he overcame a tough second set to secure a 6-3 6-7 (5/7), 6-3 victory against Djere. The Russian player has had a mixed track record on grass courts throughout his career and has never reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. However, Medvedev’s strong performance in Halle reflects his determination to succeed on this surface.
In the next round, he is set to face Roberto Bautista Agut, the eighth seed from Spain. In other matches, home favourite, Alexander Zverev, is scheduled to take on Denis Shapovalov later today. Zverev will be looking to make a strong impression on his home turf and progress further in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Medvedev’s recent form, including five ATP titles this year, indicates that he is eager to perform well on grass courts, following disappointing early exits at the Australian Open and French Open.
With the Halle tournament proving to be a crucial warm-up for Wimbledon, tennis enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting further exciting matches as the tournament progresses.
