March 28, (THEWILL) – Miami Open second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, overcame Chilean Cristian Garin 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on Monday, to book his spot in the fourth round.
Tsitsipas managed to hold serve until he broke Garin for a 5-3 lead in the first set, eventually winning the set without facing a break point. Although Garin broke Tsitsipas at 4-5 in the second set, Tsitsipas got the break he needed at 4-4 in the decider when Garin double-faulted while at 40-30 in a game that he eventually lost. The Greek then served out the match to secure his spot in the next round.
The Greek player was struggling with his ongoing shoulder issue but managed to hit 12 aces and saved three of the four break points in the two-hour match. Tsitsipas will face Russian 14th seed Karen Khachanov next, whom he has a 6-0 head-to-head record against.
In other men’s action, Argentine Francisco Cerundolo avenged his third-round loss to Canadian fifth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, at Indian Wells two weeks ago. Cerundolo won the match 6-2, 7-5, progressing to the next round of the Miami Open.
