SAN FRANCISCO, June 19, (THEWILL) – THEWILL has obtained an audio tape which revealed how Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, allegedly demanded bribe from journalist and PR consultant, Lekan Fatodu.
The tape captures a telephone conversation between Sowore and Lekan, which occurred on the 7th of January, 2016.
Sowore is overheard telling Fatodu of how the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were trailing him (Fatodu) over a contract which he did for the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) suspected to be part of The ‘Dasuki-gate’ deal.
Sowore stated that he had pleaded on Fatodu’s behalf saying “If people contacted me and said that EFCC wants to invite you to something, and I said to them, let me work on it
“If the party that brought me into this picture said they are going after you and I say calm down now, I know this guy.
“You understand…that’s what I was telling you yesterday. Ehen. That was what I was saying.”
Apparently furious with Sowore’s statement, Fatodu assured the Sahara Reporters publisher of his readiness to face the anti-graft agency, adding that he carried out a legitimate business and as such had nothing to hide from the EFCC.
Fatodu later claimed that Sowore demanded N100 million from him with the belief that he received N500 million from the office of the NSA.
THEWILL recalls that Sowore, in January 2017, was arrested by the police in Lagos over alleged threat to Fatodu’s life, criminal defamation and blackmail but was released.
On Friday, June 16, 2017, Fatodu, yet, led “anti-fake news” protesters to Sahara Reporters office located at 13B, Isaac John Street, Ikeja GRA, Lagos state.
“I’m leading this critical discussion because I’m a lucky survivor of Sowore’s malicious fake news, criminal blackmail and violence,” he explained.
“Can Sowore swear on his late father’s grave that he didn’t demand a bribe from me?”
THEWILL understands that Sowore and Fatodu used to be best of friends as the latter even sponsored Sowore’s honeymoon when the friendship lasted.
