September 12, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Rodrigo Bentancur, has been charged by the England Football Association for comments he made about teammate, Son Heung-min.
The charge relates to an interview Bentancur gave on a Uruguayan television programme where he said Son and his cousins “all look the same”.
The FA alleges that Bentancur breached Rule E3.1 by acting improperly and using abusive or insulting words. They further claim this constitutes an “aggravated breach” under Rule E3.2 as it referenced nationality, race and ethnic origin. Bentancur has until September 19 to respond to the charge.
After making the comments, Bentancur apologised to Son on social media, calling it a “joke in bad taste” and stating he would never intentionally disrespect or hurt his teammate. Tottenham later released a statement saying Son wanted to “draw a line under the incident” and reaffirming the club’s commitment to diversity.
The Uruguayan midfielder has made two English Premier League appearances for Spurs so far, in the 2024/2025 season. He missed their recent 4-0 victory over Everton due to a head injury sustained in the previous match against Leicester City.
Tottenham’s next fixture is a North London derby against Arsenal on Sunday. It remains to be seen whether the FA charge will impact Bentancur’s availability for the match as Spurs look to continue their strong start to the season.
