April 21, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur is considering Monchi, the sporting director of Sevilla, as a potential successor to Fabio Paratici, according to sources monitored by THEWILL.
Paratici resigned from his position as Spurs’ managing director of football after a 30-month worldwide ban from football was upheld by an Italian court of appeal. Although the north London club publicly claimed that they were caught off guard by FIFA’s decision, Spurs have been looking for a replacement for Paratici since late 2022.
Currently, Monchi has emerged as the most serious contender for the role. The 54-year-old is expected to leave Sevilla at the end of the current season, following a disappointing domestic campaign. He is famous for his initial 17-year stint with Sevilla, starting in 2000, when he helped oversee the club’s promotion to La Liga and established them as one of Europe’s most successful teams.
Monchi joined Roma in 2017 but only spent two years in the Italian capital before returning to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. If appointed, Monchi could potentially be paired with compatriot Luis Enrique, who is among Spurs’ leading candidates to succeed Antonio Conte as head coach.
Speaking at the World Football Summit in Seville last year, Monchi admitted that he became a sporting director by chance. He said he studied law while he was a goalkeeper, but Sevilla offered him the role of sporting director in 2000 when he had no idea what it entailed. He added that he considers a sporting director a tool of the manager and is very much a sporting director of the dressing room.
