October 22, (THEWILL) – The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has confirmed that off-court coaching will become permissible from January 1, 2025, prompting strong reactions from professional players. The announcement, made following the ITF’s annual general meeting this month, suggests the modification will enhance fairness and entertainment value in the sport.

World number six, Taylor Fritz, voiced opposition to this development on social media platform, X, stating: “Can we stop ruining the 1v1 mental/strategic aspect of the sport PLEASE.” The American player’s sentiment reflects concerns about preserving tennis’s fundamental characteristics of individual competition and tactical thinking.

Former world number 10, Denis Shapovalov, shared similar reservations, writing on X: “Tennis is special because you are out there alone. Why are you trying to change the beauty of this game.” This rule modification follows trial implementations across all four Grand Slams and professional tours since 2023.

ITF senior Executive Director, Stuart Miller, defended the decision, indicating extensive consultation with key stakeholders preceded the change. According to Miller, players reported increased tournament engagement, while coaches noted benefits to player development and professional recognition. Additionally, chair umpires indicated an improved ability to concentrate on match officiating rather than monitoring potential coaching violations.

This structural modification to tennis regulations marks a significant shift in the sport’s traditional format, where players historically competed without direct coaching assistance during matches. The change aims to modernise the game while maintaining its competitive integrity, though reactions from professional players suggest divided opinions within the tennis community.
