July 24, (THEWILL) – Jannik Sinner, the current men’s tennis world number, has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Paris Olympics due to a diagnosis of tonsillitis. The Italian player decided on Wednesday, just days before the start of the Olympic tennis tournament.
Sinner had been aiming to compete in the Olympics as one of his primary goals for the 2024 season. However, after consulting with his medical team on Tuesday, and waiting an additional day to see if his condition would improve, the 22-year-old was forced to make the difficult choice to pull out of the event.
In a statement released by Sinner, he expressed his disappointment at not being able to represent Italy at the Olympic Games. “Competing at the Olympic Games was one of my main goals for this season,” Sinner said. “However, after seeing my doctors on Tuesday and waiting an extra day to give myself some more time to see if my condition would improve, things unfortunately got worse.”
The withdrawal of the top-ranked player is a significant blow to the Olympic tennis tournament, which is set to begin later this week. Sinner’s absence opens up the men’s singles draw and may increase the chances for other top contenders to claim Olympic gold.
The Italian Tennis Federation is expected to announce a replacement for Sinner in the coming days.
