April 24, (THEWILL) – The Anambra Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), says it has sent tax demand notices to state indigenes and residents through text messages.

The head, public relations unit, Personal income tax of the Service, Sylvia Ngige, disclosed this in Awka.

Ngige said the charges are statutory obligations of earning citizens to the government.

She said those who got the messages and claimed they live outside Anambra should go to the online portal of the service and file returns without delay.

For easy administration, each citizen has a unique tax identification number with the state.

This will help in resolving arguments that might arise from the inability of the citizens to successfully file their returns online.

For those living outside the state, they should show evidence of tax payment in their state of residence to support their claim that they live and do business there, Ngige explained.

She said the expectation is that they should file a return and pay to the State government of their residence.

“They should also file a return to the Anambra government with evidence to prove that they declared all income in their states of residence and are not supposed to pay personal income tax to the Anambra government.”

NAN reports that residents and indigenes had received text messages with an indiscriminate distribution of tax demand notices from AIRS, asking for the same amount as tax, despite differences in earnings.

“Dear …, you are in default of remitting N175,117.34 as Personal Income Tax for 2021 to ANSG. Pay now to avoid further penalties. www.anambra.tax”, the text message reads.
