Pope Leo XIV

The 71-year-old pontiff was allowed to leave the hospital after fresh medical examinations, including blood tests and a chest X-ray, confirmed that his clinical condition was satisfactory for discharge.

The Vatican confirmed the diagnosis on Tuesday after the 71-year-old pontiff underwent thoracic surgery at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome, in the first major publicly disclosed health challenge of his pontificate.

The 71-year-old Pontiff personally disclosed the development on Sunday while addressing the faithful gathered for the Angelus, saying doctors had advised that the nodule be surgically removed.
