Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s revelation that his wife took ill after eating fresh oranges that a laboratory test confirmed were not fit for consumption has further raised concerns about the source, handling, packaging and distribution of the produce that end up on the dining tables of millions of Nigerians.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, renewed the agency’s position on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, saying alcohol consumption is linked to banditry and warning about its effects on vital organs including the brain, kidneys and liver.

The latest directive marks an escalation of the Federal Government’s enforcement of restrictions on small-volume alcoholic drinks, which authorities say are particularly concerning because of their affordability and accessibility.

The agency said the enforcement followed the expiration of the transition periods agreed with manufacturers and other industry stakeholders to enable businesses to adjust their production lines and move away from the prohibited packaging.
