December 4, (THEWILL) – This privileged status means Switzerland can further develop its proposal over the next 5 years. If both parties are satisfied with progress by end-2027, they will enter “targeted dialogue” about potentially awarding Switzerland the 2038 Games.
This would mark Switzerland’s first time hosting the Olympics since the 1948 Winter Games in St. Moritz. The proposed “Switzerland 203x” concept involves holding decentralised events across existing venues countrywide.
This aims to minimise resource consumption. Swiss Olympic President Jürg Stahl welcomed the IOC’s willingness to continue discussions about the unique decentralised model.
Urs Lehmann, President of Swiss Ski, believes hosting the 2038 Games can support efforts to sustain winter sports and benefit Swiss sport overall. The extended timeline now allows more time to address key issues around legacy, sustainability, infrastructure and security.
Thomas Rechberger, CEO of Switzerland 203x, acknowledged the need to adapt their initial 2030 proposals to better fit the reality of hosting in 2038. His team will work with stakeholders across Switzerland to develop concrete solutions on venues, transport, finances and community engagement.
