Swiatek Thrashes Podoroska To Reach Final Of French Open

SAN FRANCISCO, October 08, (THEWILL) – Iga Swiatek turned on the class to book her place in the finals at this year’s Roland Garros. In her masterclass, she romped everything Nadia Podoroska put up in the match to a 6-2 6-1 win.

The 19-year-old Polish professional was not remotely fazed as she ruthlessly raced through the opening set conceding only two games. She outplayed her Argentine opponent with her ebullient display.

As the results show, the second set was even more one-sided than the first. Podoroska all but struggled to get a grip in windy conditions on Court Philippe-Chatrier but failed to establish herself on the circumstances of the match.

Reaching the grand finale of the clay-court open is something of a remarkable achievement for the Pole as she continues on her determined and focussed run, taking the tennis scene by storm. She was the one who stunned the Roland Garros world with the huge upset of knocking out title favourite, the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and was responsible for taking out top-seed Simona Halep.

THEWILL can conclude that it was therefore not much of a surprise that this semi-final was over swiftly, having lasted just about one hour and 10 minutes.

Six matches and six dominant performances from Swiatek and she progresses into her first Slam final without once dropping a set. She rounded this one off with two searing backhand winners followed by an easy service winner.

THEWILL knows how hard she must have worked to get here and though this is supposed to be a difficult play, she made it look so easy. The most games she has lost in any match in the Open is 5. That is incredible all in itself.

“I’m kind of surprised, really, because I would have never thought before the tournament that I would play so good here,” she said post-match. “But, on the other hand, I always knew that if I’m gonna be in the final of a Grand Slam, it’s gonna be the French Open. So, I’m really happy, it’s like a dream come true.

“I wanted to play this match as if it would be first round. I didn’t want to think this was a semi-final because it would stress me . . . I don’t know, I feel lucky that I’m feeling good and nothing hurts me. I hope I’m gonna play a great match tomorrow, doubles with my partner, and singles in two days.”

The World No. 54 Polish finalist will now wait for the results of the other semi-final match between fourth seed, the American Sofia Kenin and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic to discover her opponent for the final.
