February 08, (THEWILL) – The Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC) has launched a feasibility study to analyse the possibility of hosting the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The study will examine how the Olympic games can be adapted to Sweden’s context and will be led by SOC Acting Vice-President, Hans von Uthmann. Sweden has previously expressed interest in hosting the 2026 Winter Games, but the bid was awarded to Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy.
According to SOC Secretary General Åsa Edlund Jönsson, the feasibility study will be based on the concept that was presented for the 2026 bid and will assess whether Sweden is ready to move forward in the bidding process. The study has received support from Swedish Paralympic Committee President Åsa Llinares Norlin and National Sports Federation Chief Björn Eriksson. The SOC plans to release an interim report on the study at its General Assembly on April 20.
Sweden has never hosted the Winter Olympics, despite being a strong winter sport nation. Sapporo in Japan, Salt Lake City in the United States, and Vancouver in Canada are also considering bids to host the 2030 Winter Games. However, these bids are facing various challenges, such as opposition from the public, lack of government funding, and conflicting sponsorships.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has stated that the decision on the 2030 host city might be postponed until 2024.
