January 18, (THEWILL) – The Super Eagles claimed an important 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast on Thursday evening, in the second round of the group stage matches at the Africa Cup of Nations. The match took place at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé. This was Nigeria’s first-ever win against Ivory Coast on Ivorian soil.

Manager José Peseiro made two changes to Nigeria’s starting 11 following their opening 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea. Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze were handed their first starts of the tournament. Nigeria enjoyed the better of the early chances, with Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, failing to capitalise on an opportunity created by Chukwueze in the 7th minute.

Both sides had further chances as the half wore on, with Semi Ajayi going closest for Nigeria right on half-time. The game’s pivotal moment came early in the second half when Osimhen was fouled in the box. Captain William Troost-Ekong converted the resulting 55th-minute penalty to give Nigeria the lead. Osimhen later had a chance to double Nigeria’s advantage but sent his effort wide.

Ivory Coast failed to mount a comeback as Nigeria professionally saw out the closing stages to claim the victory. The win leaves Nigeria well positioned heading into their final group match against Guinea-Bissau on Monday evening.

Peseiro’s charges currently sit 2nd in Group E behind Equatorial Guinea on goal difference. One more positive result should see them safely into the knockout rounds, as the quest for a fourth continental trophy appears to still be on course.
