October 15, (THEWILL) – The Super Eagles faced an extraordinary 20-hour ordeal during their recent trip to Libya for an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match. The ordeal began when their chartered flight was unexpectedly redirected from Benghazi to Al-Abraq International Airport in Labraq, despite having all the necessary documentation for landing in Benghazi.

Upon arrival at Al-Abraq, the Nigerian delegation encountered numerous difficulties. The airport lacked proper equipment for processing international travellers, and officials were reportedly discourteous. No representatives from the Libyan Football Federation were present to welcome the team and promised transportation to Benghazi failed to materialise.

The situation worsened as the Nigerian team was forced to spend the night in the airport’s departure lounge without access to food, water, or proper facilities. This treatment was allegedly due to false claims about the Libyan team’s experience in Nigeria. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) vehemently denied these accusations, stating they had provided all necessary assistance to the Libyan team during their visit.

As dawn broke, the Nigerian community in Eastern Libya provided some relief, bringing food and drinks to the stranded team. However, after extensive consultations with various authorities, including the Confederation of African Football (CAF), it was decided that the match should not proceed. The team’s captain, William Ekong, had earlier expressed concerns about the players’ ability to compete due to fatigue and the safety of the players after such poor handling of their welfare.

The Nigerian delegation finally departed Al-Abraq Airport after a 20-hour stay, returning to Nigeria via Kano. The NFF has formally complained to CAF about the treatment received in Libya, requesting appropriate action be taken regarding the unplayed match.
