July 14, (THEWILL) – Uruguay finished in third place in the 2024 Copa America after a penalty shootout victory over Canada. The match ended 2-2 after normal time, with Luis Suarez scoring a late equalizer to force penalties.
Rodrigo Bentancur opened the scoring for Uruguay early on, but Canada fought back with goals from Ismael Kone and Jonathan David. Suarez’s stoppage-time strike sent the game to penalties, where Uruguay emerged victorious.
The shootout saw drama as Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet saved Kone’s penalty. Alphonso Davies had the chance to keep Canada in contention, but his Panenka attempt struck the crossbar, handing Uruguay the win.
