August 30, (THEWILL) –Â Cristiano Romero, an Argentine international, who was originally signed by Tottenham on a loan last summer, has now been taken on a permanent basis from Atalanta.
Romero, whose aggressive defence style has made him a fan favourite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, has signed a long-term contract that runs until 2027. An option for a permanent deal from Atalanta, estimated to be worth €55 million (£47 million), was part of the initial loan agreement.
The former Juventus player was absent for a significant part of the last campaign due to injury, but he ultimately settled into Antonio Conte’s back-three, starting 15 straight Premier League games after regaining his fitness at the beginning of February.
Romero started the season for Spurs but has missed the team’s last two victories over Wolves and Nottingham Forest due to injury. However, he started practising again on Monday in preparation for the London derby against West Ham in midweek.
