April 25, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur fans who travelled to St James’ Park for Sunday’s game against Newcastle, will be reimbursed by the club’s first-team squad, confirmed in a joint statement released on Tuesday afternoon.
This follows Spurs’ 6-1 thrashing by Newcastle in what was their worst performance of the season so far. Despite being fifth in the English Premier League table, the club’s recent fortunes led to interim manager, Cristian Stellini, being replaced by Ryan Mason until the end of the season.
Daniel Levy, the chairman of the club, took accountability for the club’s recent performances in a statement released on Monday. Before his sack, Stellini himself blamed the players’ mentality, a veiled callback to the same sentiments expressed by ex-manager, Antonio Conte.
The squad statement read: “As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger. Sunday wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this, but believe us, a defeat like this hurts.
“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park.”
