August 19, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur earned their first English Premier League win under new manager, Ange Postecoglou, on Saturday, defeating Manchester United 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
While there were some pre-match protests against club ownership, Postecoglou received a warm reception from Spurs supporters eager to see his attacking style implemented. The match saw chances at both ends in an open and entertaining affair. Spurs deservedly took the lead in the 49th minute when Pape Matar Sarr drilled the ball high into the net from close range.
The hosts continued to threaten and sealed the win in the 83rd minute as Ivan Perisic’s cross took a deflection off Ben Davies before beating United keeper, Andre Onana. Spurs keeper, Guglielmo Vicario, produced a superb save to deny Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes somehow headed wide from point-blank range.
Late penalty appeals for both teams were waved away. While chances flowed throughout the match, Tottenham’s greater attacking drive ultimately proved decisive as they claimed a vital three points under their new Australian manager to give their fans a lot to look forward to this season.
Tottenham now travel to Bournemouth next Saturday looking to build momentum, while Manchester United will hope to bounce back when they host Nottingham Forest on the same day. Both teams will be determined to pick up maximum points from those fixtures.
