March 21, (THEWILL)- Nigerian sportsmen and women have been making their nation proud with outstanding performances at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana. The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, lavished praise on the athletes for their remarkable feats so far.
Sprinter Chidi Okezie etched his name in history, becoming the first Nigerian man to win the 400m event since Innocent Egbunike in 1987, breaking a 37-year drought. World record holder, Tobi Amusan, reaffirmed her status as a premier athlete by dominating the women’s 100m hurdles.
The men and women 4x100m relay teams secured gold medals, with the men avenging a loss to Ghana from 21 years ago. On the boxing front, Team Nigeria displayed their might, with Zainab Adeshina, Joy Ojo, Mbata Patricia, Omole Dolapo and Olaore Adams, emerging victorious in their respective semi-final bouts, advancing to the finals.
Senator Enoh commended the athletes’ achievements, stating, “These moments are priceless to us as a nation.” As Nigeria continues to excel in other sports, the nation stands united in celebrating the triumphs of its sporting heroes.
Senator Enoh urged the athletes to maintain their focus and concentration in the remaining events, emphasising their remarkable talent and dedication that defines Nigerian sports.
