Spain Surge Past Georgia In Euro 2024 knockout Stage

July 01, (THEWILL) – Spain overcame a spirited Georgia side 4-1 in their UEFA Euro 2024 round of 16 match, setting the stage for a tough quarter-final against hosts Germany. The match, played in Cologne, saw La Roja maintain their perfect record against the Crusaders, despite an early scare.

Georgia’s goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, who finished fourth in La Liga for clean sheets this season, continued his impressive form with early saves against Pedri and Robin Le Normand. The underdogs stunned Spain in the 18th minute when Otar Kakabadze’s cross deflected off Le Normand for an own goal. However, Spain’s relentless pressure eventually paid off, with Rodri equalising in the 39th minute with a superb touch and finish from the edge of the box.

The second half saw Spain assert their dominance. Fabián Ruiz headed home from a Lamine Yamal cross to put La Roja ahead, before Nico Williams extended the lead with a brilliant solo effort. Dani Olmo added a fourth with a skilful touch and cool finish, cementing Spain’s status as the only team to have won all their games at Euro 2024 thus far.

Georgia, while defeated, can leave the tournament with their heads held high after a determined performance. Their stunning opener and several attacking forays, including Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s audacious attempt from inside his own half, demonstrated the fighting spirit that has endeared them to fans throughout the competition.

As Spain prepare for their quarter-final showdown with Germany, they will be buoyed by their impressive form. However, the hosts will undoubtedly provide a stern test in what promises to be one of the most eagerly-awaited matches of the tournament.
