September 05, (THEWILL) – The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Tuesday, that it has appointed Montse Tome, as the new manager of the women’s national football team.
Tome will be the first woman to take charge of the side in the country’s history. She steps into the role after the RFEF terminated the contract of former coach Jorge Vilda earlier on Tuesday. She had previously served as Vilda’s assistant manager since 2018.
The Federation said Tome has been a “key player” in the team’s development during that time. The appointment comes just weeks after Spain won the Women’s World Cup for the first time. However, the victory was overshadowed by the kiss controversy surrounding RFEF President Luis Rubiales. He was recently suspended by FIFA for a 90-day period.
A new RFEF board has now been formed in the aftermath. It has moved swiftly to appoint Tome in what is seen as an effort to overhaul the culture within the women’s game in Spain.
Tome will take charge of her first match later this month when Spain faces Sweden in a European Championship qualifier. The Federation will hope she can build on the World Cup success and establish Spain as a dominant force in the women’s game.
