July 26, (THEWILL) – South Sudan’s national basketball team, known as the Bright Stars, is set to make history at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The team, comprised of players from various countries, including the United States, Australia, and Canada, qualified for the Games for the first time after an impressive performance at the 2023 Basketball World Cup. Despite their diverse backgrounds, the players share a common goal: to represent their young nation with pride on the global stage.

Many team members have roots in refugee camps, with parents who fled during the long-running Sudan conflict. Captain Kuany Kuany emphasised the team’s role as a symbol of hope for their country, which has faced numerous challenges since gaining independence in 2011.

The team’s rapid rise to international prominence has been guided by Luol Deng, a former NBA All-Star who took over as head of South Sudan’s Basketball Federation in 2019. Deng’s leadership, combined with the coaching expertise of Royal Ivey, has transformed the Bright Stars into a competitive force in just four years.

At the Olympics, South Sudan will face tough competition in their group, which includes basketball powerhouse, the United States. However, the team remains optimistic about their chances and the positive impact their participation will have on their nation. Player Wenyen Gabriel highlighted the importance of unity and representation, stating that their efforts go “way deeper than basketball”.

The South Sudanese diaspora is expected to turn out in force to support the Bright Stars in Paris. With their Olympic debut, the team hopes to bring attention to their country’s potential and inspire a new generation of athletes and citizens.
